Très rare, le nom est porté dans la Lozère. Il est un peu plus fréquent sous les formes Balmadier (48) et Beaumadier (34, 83). Sans doute celui qui habite un lieu-dit "la Balmade" ou "la Baumade" (lieu où il y a des grottes ou des rochers).
